Racing brake calipers receive a lot of punishment during races and practice sessions.  Racing brake calipers have been known to achieve temperatures ranging from 300-500 degrees.  Calipers that are used in high heat situations and have seen many heat cycles are in need of proper service.  Seals within a caliper are a very important part of the brake system.  Old, hard, deformed, and/or overworked seals will not let the caliper perform as intended.  Seals get hot and lose their ability to work properly with the seal to piston interface.  The caliper seal is designed to hold pressure in the caliper.  When the pressure is released, the seal will retract the piston to keep the brakes from dragging.
